🍷 North Shore Booze Crisis

What's Happening? As of last week, BC Liquor store workers have joined the ongoing BCGEU strike, with more than 600 staff walking off the job at more than 75 of the province’s government liquor stores, including all BCLs on the North Shore. The strike comes on top of earlier warehouse shutdowns, which means anyone heading to a BC Liquor Store on the North Shore will experience closed doors and picket lines. Altogether, more than 15,000 public service workers are now part of the escalating job action.

What You Need to Know: With BCLs closed and distribution on hold, shelves are starting to run dry at private liquor stores, which are unable to get imported product until the strike is over. Most stores seem confident they’ll be able to get local beer if the strike lasts, but wine (even BC wine) is a question mark. Restaurants are also worried, scrambling to find supply where possible in the hopes their drinks business won’t dry up.

The Takeaway: No one knows how long the strike will last, but staff at The Gull on Friday told us they were expecting it to last for at least two weeks, which we’re now halfway through. Let’s hope the union and the province get back to the bargaining table soon,

All BCLs on the North Shore are closed at the time of writing:

🐟 Salmon Spotting

Salmon are returning to North Shore rivers and creeks this fall for their annual spawning run, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation has identified prime viewing locations on the North Shore: the sandy beach next to Maplewood Farm, Mosquito Creek Park, and the Capilano Fish Hatchery. In October and November, you’re most likely to spot Coho and Chum salmon. If you go, don’t disturb the salmon: stay out of the stream, don’t throw rocks and sticks into the water, approach quietly, and keep dogs on leash.

🌳 Request a Street Tree

The District of North Van is inviting residents to request a free tree for their street. The initiative supports the District's goals related to the climate, including filtering air pollutants, enhancing biodiversity, intercepting stormwater runoff, reducing soil erosion, and providing shade and temperature regulation. Request a tree.
