🧡 New “Every Child Matters” Crosswalk in North Vancouver
What’s Happening? A new “Every Child Matters” crosswalk has been unveiled in North Van by the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). It’s part of a national Orange Shirt Society project, with eight crosswalks now in place across Canada.
What you need to know: The crosswalk sits on Sleil-Waututh Road off Dollarton Highway and was designed by Tsleil-Waututh artist Candace Thomas. It features a thunderbird holding a baby on an orange background, symbolizing survivors and those who never returned from residential schools. The project was a partnership between the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Orange Shirt Society, District of North Van, and North Shore Community Foundation.
The Takeaway: The crosswalk is a permanent marker of the residential school legacy and a visible step in ongoing reconciliation efforts on the North Shore.
