The best things to do and know on the North Shore: August 21 to 27, 2025

Good morning, North Shore Crew! Your weekly cheat-sheet to North & West Van is here. New Here? Subscribe here

â´ď¸ Ship Happens at Seaspan
What's Happening? Seaspan just marked 15 years of ship building under the federal National Shipbuilding Strategy, and theyâre not slowing down. The North Van shipyard is about to break ground on a new $65 to $70 million assembly hall that will let them build bigger ship sections, faster.
The Backstory. Back in 2010, Canadaâs shipbuilding industry was in rough shape. Then Seaspan landed a huge federal contract to renew the Navy and Coast Guard fleets. That turned the formerly sleepy North Van yard into one of the busiest industrial hubs in the region, growing from 100 workers to over 3,300, and building everything from science vessels to Arctic-ready ships.
Why is this Important? Seaspan is now the North Shoreâs biggest employer, and it brings billions into our local economy (cough, cough: potential newsletter sponsor?).
The Takeaway. Seaspan isnât just building ships, itâs a force in shaping the North Shore itself. More growth means more jobs, more dollars going to our tax base, and more of a spotlight on the North Shore.

Register here.
đ° Worldâs Biggest Bouncy Castle
From worldâs biggest hike toâŚworldâs biggest bouncy castle. Running August 23 to 31 at Concord Pacific Place (yes - you have to cross the bridge), The Big Bounce is an all-ages, 3-hour bouncy castle experience that is indeed very large. Family sessions and adults-only sessions available. Tickets here.
