🍺 North Shore Brewers Join Fight Against "Unfair" BC Tax System

What's Happening? The BC Craft Brewers Guild has launched the "Protect BC Craft Beer" campaign, which advocates for BC tax reforms to stop favouritism toward foreign-owned beer giants. North Shore breweries Streetcar Brewing, La Cerveceria Astilleros, and Bridge Brewing have joined the fight.

The Backstory. Over 20 BC craft breweries closed this year amid financial pressures. According to the campaign, the current tax system gives foreign beer conglomerates $9 million in annual rebates while penalizing small brewers with higher rates.

Why is this important? North Shore's craft scene is struggling. House of Funk is up for sale after sharing their short-lived rebrand "was done with the intention of improving revenue - because to be frank, this past year has been tough." And the numbers do seem brutal: BC craft brewers pay $80,000 in markup fees for 2,000 hectolitres, compared to Alberta brewers, who pay just $20,000.

According to Street Car Brewing: "While we’re scraping together every dollar, foreign-owned beer giants are getting $9 million in taxpayer rebates…We’ve watched too many friends close their doors. Lost too many community spaces. Too many local jobs.”

The Takeaway. North Shore breweries are fighting for survival against a system that favours foreign giants over local businesses. Want to help? Write to your MLA.

🌴 Harbour Beach Pop-Up at Waterfront Park

The City of North Van has a new spot for weekend hangs with Harbour Beach, the new waterfront patio pop-up happening Fridays and Saturdays until the end of August at Waterfront Park. Open from 3 to 8pm, this is your spot for North Shore brewery drinks, rotating food vendors, jumbo lawn games, and live DJs spinning the soundtrack to your weekend. Perfect timing to catch golden hour over downtown Vancouver, and it’s dog- and family-friendly.

This weekend: drinks by La Cervaceria, food by Mr. Arancino, and tunes by DJ Delco.

🚒 Last Call: Hot Summer Nights

Somehow it's already mid-August, which means one final 2025 edition of Hot Summer Nights — happening tonight (Thursday) at Lynn Valley Field from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

If you're not familiar, this is one of the North Shore's most fun events for kids. North Shore firefighters roll up with ladder trucks and engines to spray kids with fire hoses, soaking everyone and creating one muddy, hilariously fun mess. Beat the heat while meeting the North Shore's bravest. Dress your kids in bathing suits, bring towels, and prepare for them to get completely soaked.
